You can talk about the versatile and diverse nature of bicycles for a very long time. Two-wheelers are undoubtedly practical and ecological means of transport, but at the same time recreational trip devices, effective tools for exercise and training, and finally unrivaled accessories for outdoor relaxation. Due to their wide range of applications, the bikes are equally successfully used by Sunday walking cyclists and professional professionals. Although the latter undoubtedly have greater hardware requirements, professional cycling shoes are able to significantly increase the comfort and efficiency of riding, regardless of our level of advancement.
Of course, there is nothing to cheat. If our bicycle trips are limited to occasional trips for the proverbial rolls to the store, and the longest distances covered are short, at most a few kilometers to work and back, cycling shoes are unlikely to play a key role. However, if we pedal on slightly longer routes at least once in a while, it is worth considering investing in professional cycling shoes. Properly used, they will serve for at least a few seasons, and the level of increased comfort, safety, and performance in such specialized footwear cannot be overestimated.
The main feature that distinguishes dedicated cycling shoes from ordinary footwear is their sole. Much thicker and stiffer, it transfers the energy generated during pedaling to the bike´s drive incomparably more efficiently. Riding in such shoes simply becomes more efficient! At the same time, a solid, thick sole increases our safety when having to unexpectedly support the foot, let alone fall. It is not without significance that the soft soles of ordinary shoes simply wear off faster due to pressure on the pedals. Cycling shoes of such renowned manufacturers as Shimano or Giro will simply serve us much longer.
So how to properly choose cycling shoes? The answer is both simple and complicated, and it should be looked for in the driving style we practice. Radically simplifying the matter, you can say that the less we stop while pedaling, the stiffer the sole will work in our case. Of course, each rule has its exceptions, but basically remember that cycling shoes are for riding, not necessarily walking.
Choosing the right model of bicycle footwear is in some way dictated by the pedals of our two-wheeler. Perhaps the simplest categorization is the division into SPD shoes, i.e. shoes intended for clipless pedals, and shoes with a regular sole, for classic platform pedals. The acronym SPD comes from the name of the patented Shimano Pedaling Dynamics mechanism, which consists in attaching the sole of the shoe to the structure of the pedal. Undoubtedly, this is a solution intended for slightly more experienced cyclists and requires some practice, especially at the beginning. On the other hand, detachable cycling shoes allow for a much more effective ride, as energy transfer becomes possible not only when pushing the pedal down, but also lifting it - along with the entire foot - up.
Road Cycling Shoes
It is not without reason that the click system is recognized by professionals as unrivaled over long distances! Therefore, if our preferred type of riding are long trips, mainly on asphalt, let´s choose light, but at the same time stiff and hard road shoes, the construction of which will increase the dynamics of the ride.
MTB Trail Bike Shoes
A special subcategory of cycling footwear are MTB shoes, which come in different varieties. Competition cycling shoes are also characterized by a lightweight and stiff click-on sole, while leisure mountain bike shoes can have a much softer sole, allowing not only relatively intense riding, but also walking.
Touring/Trekking Bike Shoes
Off-road cycling shoes differ significantly from the above models. Due to the specificity of touring, footwear adapted to it should allow for much more comfortable walking. For this reason, cycling trekking shoes have soles that are much softer than road shoes and MTB shoes, being the perfect compromise between walking comfort and two-wheel performance.
Urban Bike Shoes
The most universal category are city shoes. A soft sole, enabling walking on foot as in traditional footwear, will be perfect, above all, in recreational riding, over relatively short distances. Such shoes are the best choice for riding, during which we have to stop frequently, e.g. at traffic lights or in traffic jams.
Triathlon Cycling Shoes
A separate category of cycling shoes are anatomical triathlon shoes, intended for competitors of this demanding discipline. Their unique design allows you to quickly insert your foot, and the soft insole allows for comfortable use of footwear even without socks. Even more than other cycling shoes, they are waterproof and breathable.
E-Bike Cycling Shoes
An interesting type are e-bike shoes, i.e. footwear intended for platform pedals on electric bikes. Thanks to the stiffened sole and the high degree of friction, they allow for high riding efficiency while pedaling. On the other hand, the footwear profile also allows comfortable and stable walking. Thanks to the special shape of the sole, both women´s cycling shoes and men´s cycling shoes are characterized by high adhesion to the ground, and the materials used in them guarantee low weight and proper ventilation of the shoes. |
